What to know
- AQA 7702 treats language as patterned variation rather than a list of grammar labels. A speaker or writer’s choices relate to identity, audience, purpose and situation. A useful analysis connects a linguistic feature to that context while avoiding the unsupported claim that one feature proves a person’s identity.
What to do in an assessment
- Describe the relevant context, identify a precise language pattern, and explain how it may position the audience or construct a relationship. Consider another plausible explanation where appropriate. Use terminology to make the observation precise, not to substitute for the interpretation.
In plain language
People adapt language in different situations. Your job is to explain what a pattern might do here, without pretending that one word tells you everything about its speaker.
Self-check
Why is one language feature not proof of a speaker’s identity?
Show the answer
The same feature can occur for different reasons, so interpretation must consider context and other evidence.
