    What to know

    • An induction proof has a base case and a step. First verify the statement at its starting integer. Then assume it holds for n = k and use that assumption to prove it for n = k + 1.

What to do in an assessment

    • State the induction hypothesis clearly, write the next expression by adding the new term, factor the result into the claimed form, and finish by stating that the formula follows for all integers in its stated range.

    In plain language

    For 1 + 2 + … + n = n(n + 1)/2, the base case n = 1 gives 1 = 1. Assume the sum to k is k(k + 1)/2. The sum to k + 1 is k(k + 1)/2 + (k + 1) = (k + 1)(k + 2)/2, exactly the formula with n replaced by k + 1. Each step is necessary: checking several values alone is not a proof for every n.

    Self-check

    Using the formula, what is 1 + 2 + … + 8?

    Show the answer

    8 × 9 / 2 = 36.
