What to know
- An inference explains what a detail suggests beyond its literal wording. Keep the claim proportionate: one image, action or contrast may support a limited conclusion, but it cannot prove everything about a character or situation. Separate what the text states from what you infer.
What to do in an assessment
- Name the inference first, select a precise detail, and explain which word or relationship makes that reading plausible. If another interpretation fits, acknowledge the tension and decide which reading the surrounding context supports. Do not retell the passage in place of analysing it.
In plain language
Move from detail to idea in two steps: what is on the page, then what it leads you to think. The evidence should make the reasoning visible rather than decorate an unsupported opinion.
Self-check
What turns an inference into a justified interpretation?
Show the answer
A clear claim connected to a precise textual detail, with an explanation of why that detail supports the claim.
