What to know
- Convert the known reactant mass to moles using its molar mass, use the balanced equation to apply the mole ratio, then convert product moles to theoretical product mass. Percentage yield = actual yield ÷ theoretical yield × 100%. Keep the stoichiometric step explicit.
What to do in an assessment
- Balance the equation before using mole ratios and check whether the stated reactant is limiting. Use actual and theoretical yields in the same units. The percentage is not validly over 100% for a correctly measured pure product.
In plain language
A balanced equation gives the amount ratio; molar masses convert between moles and grams. Yield compares what was actually obtained with the theoretical amount.
Self-check
5.00 g CaCO₃ reacts fully. CaCO₃ + 2HCl → CaCl₂ + CO₂ + H₂O. If 1.76 g CO₂ is collected, find the percentage yield. Use Mr(CaCO₃)=100.0 and Mr(CO₂)=44.0.
Show the answer
n(CaCO₃)=5.00/100.0=0.0500 mol, so theoretical CO₂=0.0500×44.0=2.20 g. Yield=1.76/2.20×100=80.0%.
