Enterprise and entrepreneurship
- 1.1.1 Dynamic business ideas: how technology and changing consumer wants create opportunities, and how products or services become obsolete; ideas may be original or adapt existing products, services or ideas.
- 1.1.2 Risk and reward: risks include failure, financial loss and insecurity; rewards include success, profit, independence and control.
- 1.1.3 Business enterprise: businesses produce goods or services, meet customer needs and add value through convenience, branding, quality, design or unique selling points; entrepreneurs organise resources, make decisions and take risks.
Spotting a business opportunity
- 1.2.1 Customer needs: price, quality, choice and convenience; identifying and understanding customers helps generate sales and supports business survival.
- 1.2.2 Market research: purposes include understanding customer needs, finding market gaps, reducing risk and informing decisions; primary methods (surveys, questionnaires, focus groups, observation); secondary sources (internet, market reports, government reports); qualitative and quantitative data, social media data collection and reliability.

- 1.3.2 Business revenues, costs and profits: calculate revenue, fixed and variable costs, total costs, profit or loss, loan interest, break-even output and margin of safety; interpret break-even diagrams, including effects of revenue or cost changes, break-even, margin of safety, profit and loss.

Quantitative skills
- A2.1 Calculations in business contexts: percentages and percentage changes; averages; revenue, costs and profit; gross- and net-profit-margin ratios; average rate of return; cash-flow forecasts, including total costs, total revenue and net cash flow.
- A2.2 Interpret and use quantitative data to support, inform and justify decisions: graphs and charts; financial data (profit/loss, average rate of return and cash-flow forecasts); market-research/marketing data; market data including market share and changes in costs and prices. These skills are assessed across Papers 1 and 2 and total 10% of available marks; all are covered over the qualification lifetime.

- A3.1 Total costs: total fixed costs plus total variable costs.
- A3.2 Revenue: price multiplied by quantity.
- A3.3 Break-even: fixed cost divided by sales price less variable cost; break-even cost/revenue is break-even units multiplied by sales price.
- A3.4 Margin of safety: actual or budgeted sales less break-even sales.
- A3.5 Loan interest percentage: (total repayment less amount borrowed) divided by amount borrowed, multiplied by 100.
- A3.6 Net cash flow: cash inflows less cash outflows for a period.
- A3.7 Opening and closing balances: opening balance equals the previous period's closing balance; closing balance equals opening balance plus net cash flow.
- A3.8 Gross profit: sales revenue less cost of sales.
- A3.9 Gross profit margin percentage: gross profit divided by sales revenue, multiplied by 100.
- A3.10 Net profit: gross profit less other operating expenses and interest.
- A3.11 Net profit margin percentage: net profit divided by sales revenue, multiplied by 100.
- A3.12 Average rate of return percentage: average annual profit (total profit divided by number of years) divided by investment cost, multiplied by 100.
