What to know
- In Pearson 1EN0, the reading and writing tasks sit together but ask for different decisions. When reading fiction, distinguish the narrator’s viewpoint from the writer’s wider arrangement of events. In the writing task, the given purpose and audience should control voice, detail and structure.
What to do in an assessment
- For reading, track a change in viewpoint, pace or focus and support an explanation with a precise detail. For imaginative writing, plan a deliberate opening, a controlled sequence and an ending that develops rather than abruptly repeats the opening. Check sentence control and punctuation in a final pass.
In plain language
The reading question asks you to explain how a story is shaped. The writing question asks you to make your own choices on purpose, not simply produce a long piece.
Self-check
Why should a writing plan name an audience as well as a topic?
Show the answer
Audience affects the voice, detail and form needed to make the piece purposeful and coherent.
