What to know
- Eduqas A-level English Literature includes unseen-text assessment in its A2 route. Because the prose or poetry is unfamiliar, a response must establish its own reading from form, voice and detail rather than import a memorised theme. More than one interpretation may be defensible when grounded in the passage.
What to do in an assessment
- Read once for situation and movement, then reread for a few significant choices. State an interpretation, analyse how the language or structure supports it, and refine the claim if a later detail complicates the first impression. Use terminology selectively and keep every paragraph anchored to the unseen text.
In plain language
With an unseen text, the passage itself is your evidence. Build a thoughtful reading from what you can point to, not from guesses about the author.
Self-check
What should you do when a later detail challenges your first reading?
Show the answer
Revise or qualify the interpretation and explain how the new evidence changes it.
