    Open revision guidance

    What to know

    • In series, resistances add: Rtotal = R1 + R2 + …. In parallel, reciprocals add: 1/Rtotal = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + …. For two parallel resistors this can also be rearranged to Rtotal = R1R2/(R1+R2).

    What to do in an assessment

    • Check the arrangement before choosing a rule. A parallel equivalent resistance must be less than the smallest branch resistance; a series equivalent is greater than any individual resistance.

    In plain language

    Series resistors share one path; parallel resistors provide multiple paths, so their equivalent-resistance rules differ.

    Self-check

    Find the equivalent resistance of 3 Ω and 6 Ω in parallel.

    Show the answer

    R = (3×6)/(3+6) = 18/9 = 2 Ω, which is less than the smaller branch resistance.
