What to know
- Eduqas GCSE Literature includes unseen poetry in its examined route. A first reading should establish the speaker, situation and movement of the poem before you infer a theme. The poem’s form and structure are part of the evidence, but no single feature has a fixed meaning without its context.
What to do in an assessment
- Annotate a few purposeful details: a tonal change, a repeated image, a contrast or a shift in line or stanza movement. Form a focused interpretation, then explain how two or three choices support it. If a comparison is requested, compare the poems’ methods and attitudes, not only their shared topic.
In plain language
You are not expected to know the unseen poem in advance. Read what is there, decide what it suggests, and show how its construction supports your reading.
Self-check
What is a safe first step when a poem is unfamiliar?
Show the answer
Identify who seems to speak, what changes, and which textual details support that first reading.
