    What to know

    • Addition and subtraction track movement along a number line. Multiplying or dividing two numbers with the same sign gives a positive result; different signs give a negative result. These rules apply to positive and negative whole numbers.

What to do in an assessment

    • Work out the sign before the magnitude, then calculate the magnitude. For subtraction of a negative, rewrite it as addition of the corresponding positive number. Show enough non-calculator working to make the sign choices clear.

    In plain language

The signs tell you the direction of the result, while the ordinary arithmetic tells you its size. For instance, subtracting −12 means moving 12 places in the positive direction, whereas multiplying −7 by 12 gives a negative product. Separating sign from magnitude is a reliable way to avoid losing a mark through a sign slip.

    Self-check

Calculate (−7) × 12 and then subtract −8 from the result.

    Show the answer

    (−7) × 12 = −84, and −84 − (−8) = −76.
